As one of the easiest and most family friendly hikes in Natural Bridge State Park, Henson Cave Arch should be on everyones itinerary when paying a visit to the Red River Gorge area. At 0.4 miles, the short trail leads to a 10 foot deep sinkhole, with a staircase leading down into a cave opposite a waterfall. Once inside, you can peer out through a skylight in the cave ceiling where the arch is located. If you’re feeling adventurous, travel a little further up the hill to explore the large rock shelter beyond the arch, containing several caves and a hidden wet weather spring. Located within the Whittleton Campground just off Ky 11, I tackled this hike as an add on to visiting Whittleton Arch in Red River Gorge. Henson's Arch Trail Map | Natural Bridge State Park Getting here is quite simple as the campground is directly across the street from the main entrance into Natural Bridge State Park. You will have to park on the side of the road in the entrance area surrounding the campground managers kiosk. Despite its small size, this campground is constantly packed, so get here early to find a place to park. From the parking area, head north and cross the wooden bridge spanning Whittleton Branch towards the restrooms. Red River Gorge Cliffty Wilderness and the Natural Bridge State Park are located in eastern Kentucky. They consist of 26,000 acres for wonderful hiking adventures. Within the Red River Gorge is nearly a 1,000 acre hikers gem of a place called the Natural Bridge State Park Nature Preserve that was carved over millions of years by wind and water.

This is one of the best Spring hikes in Red River Gorge with plenty of wildflowers lining the trail, a massive arch, and when the weather is right, a waterfall flowing over the top of the arch. Kids love this hike - just be sure to keep them close when you arrive at the arch.

Having hiked a large portion of the marked trails in Red River Gorge to view some of the most spectacular natural landmarks in the park, I often curiously wonder about some of the secret trails within the gorge. Those familiar with the area know that the park is riddled with hidden trails leading to secret arches, waterfalls, and stone landmarks. With a little research and basic orienteering skills, even the most novice hiker can experience the thrill of finding one of the many hidden sights within Red River Gorge. With that in mind comes a note of CAUTION: This is an unmarked trail, not registered on any official map of Red River Gorge Geological Area. This hike includes scrambling over exposed cliffs and rock ledges that have resulted in deaths and injuries. Do not venture out alone. Use common sense and do not attempt anything that would put yourself or others at risk. This is NOT meant to be an instructional article, but a recollection of my own journey. Do your own research before going out and attempting this hike! Half Moon Arch is one of the most popular and easiest of the secret arches in Red River Gorge to find. Located within the Chimney Top Recreation Area, this exposed mountain top can be seen from the Chimney Rock Overlook and the Sheltowee Trace Trail.
