Abraham's faith in the Lord and His promises was tested when he was commanded to sacrifice his covenant son, Isaac. When Abraham proved his faithfulness, the Lord spared Isaac and provided a substitute sacrifice. The Lord then confirmed the covenant He had previously made with Abraham.

In Gen 22, Abraham's faith was tested by the apparent contradiction of God's promise with his command. 17 God's promise to bless the world through the offspring of Isaac came into conflict with God's command to sacrifice Isaac before he had any offspring.

The Akedah, or “Binding of Isaac,” is the Genesis account of Abraham—at the command of God—attempting to sacrifice his son on Mt. Moriah. In sum, Abraham fastens Isaac to an altar and prepares to incinerate him before an angel commands him to stop.

The first major part of the Tanakh is named the Torah. The name comes from the Hebrew word meaning “law” or “instruction”. The Torah is made up of the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

His sovereignty assures that He not only knows about us, but that He knows what we will do. This means that when He tests us, it is not to see if we will succeed or fail. Our worthiness was never in question. Instead, God's testing of us is to reveal something to us.

The Bible says, “When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me. ' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone” (James 1:13). But it is true that God tests us — that is, He allows us to get into situations where we must make a choice between right and wrong.

The most common understanding of Genesis 22 is that God tested Abraham to see if his commitment to God would take priority over his love for Isaac. Since Abraham proved that he was willing to give up (actually, kill) his son to prove his faithfulness to God, he is to be praised.

God promising Abraham numerous offspring, from whom “all the nations of the earth will be blessed” is nothing new. God does not promise this to Abraham because Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac. God promised this to Abraham before Abraham even had any children!

1) OBJECT LESSON: A SACRIFICE WAS NEEDED TO SORT OUT OUR SIN

A sacrifice is something we want to keep but we give away anyway. Abraham wanted to keep his son Isaac, but he loved God so much that he obeyed God. He gave God the present He wanted. God loves our obedience even better than us sacrificing!

Instead of allowing the boy to be sacrificed, the Lord calls out to Abraham moments before he kills Isaac, laying bound on an altar. Because of Abraham's obedience, God renews and emphasizes His promises of blessing, multiplied offspring, and victory over future enemies.

The book of Genesis begins with God taking disorder and darkness and creating out of it order, beauty, and goodness. He creates a world where life can flourish, as well as creatures to inhabit that world. God makes humans, or adam in Hebrew, in "his image," a concept that has to do with their role in God's world.

In the biblical narrative, God orders Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac at Moriah. As Abraham begins to comply, having bound Isaac to an altar, he is stopped by the Angel of the Lord; a ram appears and is slaughtered in Isaac's stead, as God commends Abraham's pious obedience to offer his son as a human sacrifice.
